Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on 20 August 2020 the discovery of a large gas field in the Sakarya Block, located 175 km offshore Ereğli, in the Black Sea. This article aims to elaborate on the importance of this discovery for Turkey from a historical perspective, discuss the questions raised following the announcement, and examine its possible implications.
